The Family Wash — Fashion Moda
July 19 - August 15, 1980

Before your eyes, as you watch and participate, I transform the commonplace routine of hanging clothes into a South Bronx fantasy that encompasses yards and yards of clothesline hung with little masterpieces of collage. ‘Sheets’ of mylar are trimmed with ornaments, bells, fringe, photos, mirrors, beads — all sparkling away under a canopy of twinkling ‘clouds.’ The walls with my oil paintings swathed in gauzy fabric suggest windows framing views of a mystical Bronx backyard.
 
Beneath the ‘laundry’ there’s a whimsical pool of soap bubble liquid and floating wands so everyone can blow their own bubbles. And those who wish to will be encouraged to add their individual artistic creations to the clothesline collection, thus giving an added quality of excitement and immediacy to an exhibit that vibrates with color and vitality.

Marianne Edwards was one of the Artists-in-Residence at Fashion Moda, a ‘cultural concept’ created by Stefan Eins, an Austrian-born artist who pioneered alternate art spaces.

This participatory aspect of the installation reflects my philosophy of bringing the South Bronx environment into the art creation and drawing all people into my vision. I want to express the energy and infinite diversity of the world out there. The clotheslines are a metaphor to link all people regardless of their race or nationality.
To share my images with others is my goal, and I also hope to pull the spectator into the work as much as possible.”

I have also created special T-shirts trimmed with all kinds of unique decorations that will he displayed in the Front windows of the storefront museum. The idea is to
