Artist's Statement
What is more relevant than our relationships with others, our feelings about ourselves and about our world? My paintings capture a moment in which attitudes about our relationships and our families are expressed and intimacy, loneliness, passion and anger are revealed.
Does it tell a story? Whose story could it be? My painting is an open-ended narrative. The narrative is implied; paramount are the feelings it elicits. The joy. The sadness. The tender moments.
I use intense colors, distort proportions of size, perspective and space to communicate feelings and conflicts. My paintings explore our innermost emotions, especially those involving families, mothers and children. These paintings reveal my personal experiences and extend to the universal experiences of love, attachment and romantic relationships.
Personal photographs and other materials are often my starting point. As I work, the painting develops the character and personality of the figurative images. Over time, often months, the figures evolve and relationships take hold. As I rework the paintings, I use space and light to reveal the experiences that I want to share.
I continually layer the background of the painting with expressive lines and patterns. Now the figures interact with the background, becoming more intense. I add paint, abstract and lyrical passages that intensify the psychological and emotional tension.
My work has evolved from the abstract to paintings in which the human figure has come to dominate the canvas. As I have matured, the human figures have become more psychologically complex with powerful underlying emotions. I continue to use a brilliant palette of colors, vigorous brush strokes and possess a vision that is very personal and emotive.
My paintings were a central feature of the site-specific installations I did with Creative Time, at The New Museum and at Fashion Moda. You can view these installations and my paintings in the Gallery section of this site.
